Jefferson Lab awarded $8M for accelerator technology to enable transmutation
The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is leading research supported by two Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) grants aimed at developing accelerator technology to enable nuclear waste recycling, decreasing the half-life of spent nuclear fuel.
Both grants, totaling $8.17 million in combined funding, were awarded through the Nuclear Energy Waste Transmutation Optimized Now (NEWTON) program, which aims to enable the transmutation of nuclear fuels by funding novel technologies for improving the performance of particle generation systems.

Paul is a nuclear engineering graduate from the Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute with over 45 years of experience in the nuclear industry, leading his first NPP PRA in 1977-1978. He specializes in consulting services for the application of risk-informed, performance-based concepts to optimize nuclear energy production, and covers safety, production, operations and design of nuclear facilities. He has participated in projects in over two dozen countries, supporting utilities, regulators, off-takers, and governments with technical services and training and has experience in many LWR and NLWR NPP technologies. He is a regular contributor to projects for the IAEA, the US State Department, EPRI and NEI, and participates in development of codes and standards for the ANS and ASME.
