DOE turns to private sector to build out spent nuclear fuel recycling
The Department of Energy on April 22 issued two requests for applications seeking proposals from private industry on kickstarting the reprocessing and recycling of spent nuclear fuel in the United States.
According to the DOE, the RFAs represent an unprecedented opportunity for the private sector to restore the nation’s nuclear leadership.

Dr. Garrett earned his PhD in Nuclear Engineering at MIT in 1998, specializing in Probabilistic Risk Assessment, then went on to Rocketdyne in southern CA, where he worked as a System Engineer in various capacities on every large liquid rocket engine developed by the company in the last 20+ years (X-33, RS-68, RS-83, RS-84, J-2X, & RS-25). Now as a member of the Space Nuclear Propulsion team at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, his career has come full circle, helping to develop requirements for a nuclear thermal rocket intended to serve as prototype for a Mars transportation engine
