On April 22, 1959, Rear Admiral George J. King, superintendent of the Maine Maritime Academy, announced that following the completion of the 1960 training cruise, cadets would begin the study of nuclear engineering. Courses at that time included radiation physics, reactor control and instrumentation, reactor theory and engineering, thermodynamics, shielding, core design, reactor maintenance, and nuclear aspects.

Kevin Coyne is the Senior Level Advisor for Probabilistic Risk Assessment in the Division of Risk Analysis in the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research. He joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 1994 as a graduate fellow and since that time has served in a number of progressively responsible positions, including reliability and risk analyst and operations engineer in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, resident inspector in Region III; Technical Assistant and Chief, Probabilistic Risk Assessment Branch, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research; and management positions in the Office of New Reactors and the Office of Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards. Before joining the NRC, Dr. Coyne was a nuclear shift test engineer at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He has an undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering and masters’ degrees in nuclear and mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia; and a masters and doctorate in reliability engineering from the University of Maryland. Dr. Coyne is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a graduate of the NRC’s Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program, and a recipient of the NRC’s Meritorious Service Award.
