Launching into tomorrow: NRIC guides new era of research and deployment
In June 2025, the Department of Energy announced the Reactor Pilot Program, an authorization pathway that allowed reactor developers to partner with the DOE to get first-of-a-kind (FOAK) reactors built and tested. Soon after, the DOE rolled out a complementary Fuel Line Pilot Program, which aimed to fast-track fuel projects. In all, 20 projects were accepted into the new programs.

MRF specializes in the engineering, manufacture, and servicing of precision high-temperature vacuum/ controlled-atmosphere furnaces for demanding production and R&D applications. Our systems are deployed in a wide range of advanced thermal processes. These include densification/sintering, graphitization, pyrolysis/binder removal, hot pressing, CVD, and vacuum brazing. We provide a comprehensive portfolio of furnace systems utilized in the fabrication or development of composites (C-C & CMC's), advanced ceramic materials (B4C, Si3N4, AlN & SiC) and refractory metals (Ta, Nb, W, Re, Mo, Ti & alloys). For unique process and test requirements, we develop custom solutions with our clients. MRF's engineering team created a continuous 150T hot-press system, North America's largest capacity composite (C-C & CMC) pyrolysis systems, three dimensional (3D) hot-press system, and other highly productive thermal systems.
