Take steps on SNF and HLW disposal
Matt Bowen
With a new administration and Congress, it is time once again to ponder what will happen—if anything—on U.S. spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste management policy over the next few years. One element of the forthcoming discussion seems clear: The executive and legislative branches are eager to talk about recycling commercial SNF. Whatever the merits of doing so, it does not obviate the need for one or more facilities for disposal of remaining long-lived radionuclides. For that reason, making progress on U.S. disposal capabilities remains urgent, lest the associated radionuclide inventories simply be left for future generations to deal with.
In March, Rick Perry, who was secretary of energy during President Trump’s first administration, observed that during his tenure at the Department of Energy it became clear to him that any plan to move SNF “required some practical consent of the receiving state and local community.”1

Many Missions, One Goal: Collaborating for a Safer Tomorrow
Austin, TX|AT&T Hotel & Conference Center
The plenary will feature two members of the NCS community, sharing collaboration success stories. They will be selected via a competition. Click on the + for more information.
Describe a situation where you succeeded in nuclear criticality safety because of collaboration.
All instances of collaboration that achieved a goal in Nuclear Criticality Safety are welcome so long as the instance had a substantive, positive effect on your mission. For example, collaboration between peers in the NCS field (domestic or international), operations staff and on the floor engineers, experimentalists, university professionals, students, regulators, criticality safety engineers, peers outside of NCS, etc.
To apply, submit speech summaries (350 words or less) and/or videos (2 minutes or less) to provide an idea of what we can expect from your speech. Summaries and/or video links (for example, link to YouTube upload or Dropbox) should be sent to the General Chair at tcutler@lanl.gov by June 1, 2025, with “ncsd2025” in the subject line. Winners will be notified of their selection by July 1, 2025.
Get ready for the next edition of NCSD Topical Conference. At this Topical, the top minds from the broad NCS community meet to collaborate on new developments in the field and discuss ideas on how to improve the industry for the next generation. From dedicated Session tracks like STACY Refurbishment and Restart to exciting workshops on Plutonium Chemistry, the NCSD Topical Conference has opportunities for any and every member of our community. The 2025 NCSD Topical Conference will be held in the vibrant and electrifying city of Austin, Texas. Austin is known as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ where many well-known country music icons have their roots. Every night local performers from all genres of music fill the air. Austin is also home to world class barbeque, but its eclectic food palate has something for everyone to enjoy.
