Chernobyl at 40 years: Looking back at Nuclear News
Sunday, April 26, at 1:23 a.m. local time will mark 40 years since the most severe nuclear accident in history: the meltdown of Unit 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union.
In the ensuing four decades, countless books, documentaries, articles, and conference sessions have examined Chernobyl’s history and impact from various angles. There is a similar abundance of outlooks in the archives of Nuclear News, where hundreds of scientists, advocates, critics, and politicians have shared their thoughts on Chernobyl over the years. Today, we will take a look at some highlights from the pages of NN to see how the story of Chernobyl evolved over the decades.

Project Director
Sargent & Lundy
Michael Marohl is a Project Director at Sargent & Lundy with 20 years of experience in the nuclear power industry. He has extensive expertise in new-generation nuclear facility design and has provided design leadership for the AP1000 nuclear island standard plant design completion, Vogtle Units 3 & 4 construction support, the SHINE medical isotope production facility, the NuScale standard plant design, and the BWRX-300 standard plant design. He has also provided project management leadership for the CFPP FEED project and the SMR Romania FEED project.
Mr. Marohl is a recognized technical leader in modular design, including steel-composite wall systems. He has served on ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code committees and as Sargent & Lundy’s process owner for buried piping design and reinforced concrete structures and foundation design. He has published several technical papers on advanced design topics and is a subject matter expert in new-generation nuclear project delivery.
