As the world is beginning to enter a new era of nuclear power generation, we must develop sustainable nuclear fuel cycles to support an advanced reactor fleet. The strong interest and governmental support for smaller reactors with enhanced safety features must be accompanied by a fuel supply chain that can meet the demands of new reactors coming on line. Sustainability includes an adequate fuel supply of uranium, processing and recycling of spent reactor fuel, storage & transportation, 3S by design (safety, security, & safeguards by design), and adequate human capital to support the nuclear industry, all while maintaining competitive economics. The opening plenary will provide various global perspectives on the nuclear fuel cycle, supply chain challenges, and a snapshot of how the nuclear industry is meeting the current demands.
