MIT professor develops method to verify compliance with Outer Space Treaty
Danagoulian
Areg Danagoulian of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is proposing a mechanism for verifying that Earth-orbiting satellites are in compliance with the Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits the placement of nuclear weapons in space. Danagoulian’s “concept and feasibility study,” titled “Verification of the Outer Space Treaty with cosmic protons,” was published recently in the journal Nature.

This panel will discuss the vital role of DOE’s HALEU Allocation Process in enabling advanced reactor demonstrations. Panelists from government, industry, and national laboratories will highlight key milestones achieved under the program, lessons learned, and the importance of HALEU in advancing next-generation reactors and strengthening energy security. The session will also examine HALEU recovery efforts across the national laboratory complex, DOE’s approach to material distribution, and its subsequent use in criticality experiments and reactor demonstration projects.
