North American construction is back—smaller and faster—at OPG’s Darlington
“The nuclear renaissance is real here,” said Ontario Power Generation’s Subo Sinnathamby on May 8, one year to the day after OPG secured a final investment decision to build the first of four planned BWRX-300 reactors at its Darlington nuclear power plant, and shortly after the new reactor’s foundation was lifted into place. “We got our license to construct in April and our [final investment decision] in May, and we’ve been off to the races since.”

The global interest in commercial nuclear maritime applications continues to grow. In 2025, the commercial nuclear maritime community saw approval in principle of principle for various SMR designs for floating nuclear power plants and commercial nuclear propulsion. On the international governance side, the International Maritime Organization is undertaking revision of SOLAS Chapter VIII and Resolution A.491(XII), the Code for Safety of Nuclear Merchant Ships. Additionally, the international community awaits the kick-off of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ATLAS program. This panel will take the pulse of ongoing efforts to prepare for commercial nuclear maritime applications across the nuclear sector. The panelists will discuss issues of supply chain and construction, standards and governance, and identifying nonproliferation advancements to understand where the nuclear and maritime communities are in preparation for these deployments and applications.
