Studsvik applies to build more reactors; Sweden seeks majority control of SMR company
New developments in Sweden’s nuclear energy industry continue to make headlines. Last week, Swedish engineering services firm Studsvik submitted an application to build between 600 MWe and 1,400 MWe of new nuclear power capacity “at and around” its Nyköping Municipality headquarters. Separately, the Swedish government is looking to acquire a majority ownership stake in Videberg Kraft AB.
Chief of Staff (COS) to the Associate Director of Science for the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES)
Department of Energy (DOE)
Mr. Gene Nardella is Chief of Staff (COS) to the Associate Director of Science for the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC). The FES program’s mission is to drive the scientific and technological foundation for a fusion energy source and support the development of a competitive U.S. fusion energy industry. The FES strategy is founded on advancing the basic research needed to solve foundational science and technology (S&T) gaps towards the development of fusion power as an affordable and reliable energy source in the U.S. using multiple tools and strategic approaches.
Mr. Nardella received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University in 1975. While at Drexel, Mr. Nardella had the opportunity to work for 9 months for the Philadelphia Electric Company at their Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Stations Unit 1, 2, and 3. In July 1975, Mr. Nardella was hired by the Office of Nuclear Energy in the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) which in 1978 became part of the DOE. As part of his intern program in ERDA, Mr. Nardella had the opportunity to attend Stanford University where he received a Master of Science degree in Engineering-Economic Systems in 1977. In 1978, Mr. Nardella transferred within DOE to FES where he was a program manager for various fusion technology research programs. In 2009, Mr. Nardella was asked to be the COS.
