A closer look at NRC’s proposed rule eliminating ALARA
On July 1, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposed removing the “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA) principle from its radiation protection regulations and replacing it with a graded approach. The agency also proposed increases to effluent dose limits and adjusting how it handles allowances for exceeding dose limits.

Sarah Riedel is President & CEO, Urenco, Inc. In this role, she leads the development and implementation of Urenco’s global sales strategy and plays a critical role in supporting the company’s ongoing expansion program and deployment of new enrichment capacity in the United States and worldwide. Mrs. Riedel’s background includes comprehensive experience in the nuclear fuel industry with a diversified commercial background in U.S and international uranium and nuclear fuel trading, uranium mining, and uranium enrichment sales.
She joined Urenco in 2013 and spent nine years as Vice President of Marketing & Sales with a focus on the commercial sale of uranium and uranium enrichment services in North America. In 2023, she became the Vice President of Market Development & Technical Sales, where she led the development and implementation of Urenco’s commercial strategy for advanced fuel products and services in North America. Prior to joining Urenco, Mrs. Riedel was the Director of International Sales & Marketing at Uranium One, and was a Nuclear Fuel Trader at Itochu. Prior to her leadership in the nuclear sector, Mrs. Riedel built a strong foundation in consulting, marketing, and project management at top-tier firms.
Mrs. Riedel earned her MBA with honors from the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, Corporate Finance Certificate from Georgetown, and BA in both Marketing and Organizational Management from The University of Iowa Tippie College of Business.
