Commercial shipping contributes approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce this contribution global shipping is looking toward nuclear power as a compelling solution. Bringing nuclear power to commercial shipping requires coordination between nuclear regulators and international shipping requirements. The maritime sector benefits from a long-established system of classification societies that harmonize technical rules, provide independent verification and bridge the gap between regulation and operation. In light of recent government announcements, including the U.S.–UK memorandum of understanding on a nuclear-powered merchant ship corridor, the purpose of this session is to discuss the protocols that need to be implemented to allow the use of nuclear power for shipping between the United States and the United Kingdom, to assess progress made under the MOU and identify remaining technical, regulatory, and operational actions, and how the American Nuclear Society can play a role in this development.
