ORNL–General Atomics partnership on ceramic matrix composites
A memorandum of understanding has been signed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) with the objective of working together on advanced ceramic matrix composite materials for applications in extreme environments. Materials that can withstand extreme temperatures, radiation, corrosion, and mechanical stress are required in aerospace, defense, energy, and other sectors.
According to the agreement, the San Diego–based GA-EMS will use resources from ORNL’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility to develop “scalable, efficient manufacturing techniques for extreme environment materials including precursors, fibers, composites, and coatings utilized in carbon/carbon (C/C), carbon/silicon carbide (C/SiC), and SiC/SiC composite systems.”

This dynamic panel explores the development of an academic roadmap for the nuclear energy sector, spanning from pre-K to postgraduate education (P-20). The roadmap was created from a series of workshops with 179 academic institutions across the United States focused on nuclear energy programs. Our expert panelists will discuss innovative approaches to enhance career awareness, optimize academic resources, and promote inclusive excellence in nuclear energy education. Discover how cutting-edge technologies like VR and AR are revolutionizing learning experiences, and learn about strategies to strengthen the pipeline of diverse talent into the industry. Join us for an engaging dialogue on creating a robust, accessible, and forward-thinking educational framework that will shape the future of nuclear energy. This session is essential for educators, industry professionals, policymakers, and anyone interested in the intersection of education and nuclear energy.
