Description

The OPD Mid-Career Excellence Award recognizes nuclear professionals who have demonstrated sustained technical leadership, innovation, and measurable impact over a career spanning at least 15 years in the fields of reactor operations, performance optimization, safety enhancement, advanced reactor development, or energy systems integration.

The OPD Mid-Career Excellence Award celebrates mid-career professionals who:

  • Have made significant and sustained contributions in nuclear plant operations, modernization, and performance improvements;
  • Have advanced reactor technology and contributed to the design, licensing, or deployment of advanced reactor systems;
  • Demonstrate leadership, mentorship, and engagement with ANS and OPD activities;
  • Serve as role models in the nuclear community, strengthening its future workforce and innovation capabilities.

The award consists of a plaque and is presented at the OPD Dinner at the ANS Annual Conference. OPD may provide an optional honorarium if financial assistance is needed to attend the award presentation.

Any ANS member may submit a nomination, and self-nominations are permitted.

The award consists of an engraved plaque that is presented each year.


Background

This award was established by the ANS Operations and Power Division in 2025.


Selection Method

The OPD Honors & Awards Subcommittee, composed of at least three members of the OPD Executive Committee, will evaluate all nominations.

The Subcommittee may request additional information, decline to present an award in a given year, or recommend multiple recipients if warranted. Final approval is required from the OPD Executive Committee.

Selection Criteria
Selection is based on:

  • Technical Leadership: Demonstrated leadership in reactor operations, advanced reactor technology, or system innovation.
  • Industry Impact: Measurable improvements in plant performance, safety, workforce training, or technology deployment.
  • Sustained Contribution: At least 15 years of professional contributions in relevant areas.
  • Service and Mentorship: Active involvement in ANS/OPD, support for early-career professionals, and promotion of nuclear energy.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must demonstrate a sustained contribution of at least 15 years in one or more areas as listed above.
  • The nominee must be no older than 55 years of age at the time of nomination.
  • The nominee must have been a registered OPD member in good standing for at least three (3) years.
  • Awards will not be given posthumously.

Nominations must include the completed nomination form accompanied by the following supporting documents:

  • A letter of recommendation from the nominator
  • A narrative summary (up to 1,000 words) describing the nominee's accomplishments, impact, and potential.
  • A brief chronological resume (up to 5 pages) summarizing technical, leadership, and service achievements.
  • An optional list of publications, patents, or technical reports.
  • Letters of support (support letters recommended but not required; no more than five)
