Description

The OPD Early-Career Excellence Award recognizes individuals within 10 years of their terminal degree or under 40 years of age who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to nuclear operations, advanced reactor development, safety innovation, or energy systems integration.

The OPD Early-Career Excellence Award highlights rising leaders in the nuclear industry who:

  • Have made impactful contributions in nuclear plant operations, modernization, or advanced technology;
  • Have demonstrated innovation and technical expertise early in their career;
  • Are actively engaged in ANS and OPD activities;
  • Show exceptional potential for leadership and mentorship in the nuclear energy field.

The award consists of a plaque and is presented at the OPD Dinner at the ANS Annual Conference.

OPD may provide an optional honorarium if financial assistance is needed to attend the award presentation


Background

This award was established by the ANS Operations and Power Division in 2025.


Selection Method

The OPD Honors & Awards Subcommittee, composed of at least three members of the OPD Executive Committee, will evaluate all nominations.

The Subcommittee may request additional information, decline to present an award in a given year, or recommend multiple recipients if warranted. Final approval is required from the OPD Executive Committee.

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on:

  • Innovation and Technical Leadership: Demonstrated creativity, technical expertise, and contributions in reactor operations or advanced systems.
  • Industry Impact: Evidence of positive influence on nuclear plant performance, safety, or workforce development.
  • Engagement and Potential: Commitment to ANS/OPD service and demonstrated potential for leadership in the nuclear community.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must be within 10 years of their terminal degree or no older than 40 years at the time of nomination.
  • The nominee must have been a registered OPD member in good standing for at least three (3) years.

Nominations must include the completed nomination form accompanied by the following supporting documents:

  • A letter of recommendation from the nominator
  • A narrative summary (up to 1,000 words) describing the nominee's accomplishments, impact, and potential.
  • A brief chronological resume (up to 5 pages) summarizing technical, leadership, and service achievements.
  • An optional list of publications, patents, or technical reports.
  • Letters of support (support letters recommended but not required; no more than five)
