Argonne model improves nuclear plant maintenance planning
Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have developed a multiphysics simulation modeling tool to predict how feedwater heater (FWH) tubes in a nuclear power plant break down over time. The model, which has the potential to improve maintenance schedules and save operating costs at nuclear facilities, is described in a paper titled “Numerical Analysis with Experimental Validation of Tube Fatigue Failure in Feedwater Heaters,” published in a recent issue of Engineering Failure Analysis.

The Nuclear Criticality Safety Division (NCSD) Outstanding Contributions Award is for contributions that are considered outstanding and impactful to the NCSD. This award is to recognize individuals that have significantly or continually supported the NCSD through efforts that have:
This award is typically based on a career (<15 years) of commitment with significant impact on the NCSD.
The award consists of an engraved plaque, and is presented at the NSCD Awards Banquet at the ANS Winter Conference.
Anyone can nominate a deserving NCSD member. The nominee must be a member of NCSD. Individuals who were nominated in the past and were not selected may be re-nominated.
The Nuclear Criticality Safety Division established this award in 2024.
The NCSD Honors & Awards Committee solicits nominations from NCSD members. The NCSD H&A Committee will confirm the qualifications of nominees and select the awardees by consensus.
Nominations must include the completed nomination form accompanied by the following supporting documents:
