Growth beyond megawatts
Hash Hashemianpresident@ans.org
When talking about growth in the nuclear sector, there can be a somewhat myopic focus on increasing capacity from year to year. Certainly, we all feel a degree of excitement when new projects are announced, and such announcements are undoubtedly a reflection of growth in the field, but it’s important to keep in mind that growth in nuclear has many metrics and takes many forms.
Nuclear growth—beyond megawatts—also takes the form of increasing international engagement. That engagement looks like newcomer countries building their nuclear sectors for the first time. It also looks like countries with established nuclear sectors deepening their connections and collaborations. This is one of the reasons I have been focused throughout my presidency on bringing more international members and organizations into the fold of the American Nuclear Society.
Recertification is intended to ensure continued competence through the ongoing development of knowledge and skills in the nuclear field. The process reinforces a commitment to professional growth, safety, regulatory awareness, and evolving industry practices.
All CNPs are required to renew their certification every three years, with the certification cycle ending on December 31 of the third year following initial certification or the most recent renewal.
To maintain the CNP credential, certificants must meet the following recertification requirements:
Conferences, courses, or webinars from the American Nuclear Society (ANS) provide PD hours. Other organizations that provide professional-education credit that may be acceptable for approval of CNP recertification include, but are not limited to:
As an alternative to submitting PD hours, certificants may choose to renew by examination. This option requires the individual to meet all other renewal requirements and successfully pass the current version of the CNP examination under the eligibility criteria in effect at the time of renewal.
All certificants are responsible for tracking their own recertification dates and maintaining records of their continuing education or examination activities. Professional-development courses and activities must be relevant to the core competencies of the CNP program and aligned with professional roles and new or more recent information stemming from the nuclear industry.
