DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

This paper presents a helium cooled, lithium breeder with beryllium multiplier tandem mirror blanket concept. Beryllium has been added solely to increase blanket performance. Several candidate blanket concepts were considered. The two main conclusions emerging from this work are that: 1) all blankets have serious uncertainties and potential flaws that could limit their performance, and 2) beryllium can significantly increase economic performance.
