The 2014 Special Award topic is Enhancing nuclear power plant safety in response to the Fukushima accident.

Established in 1962, this award recognizes an individual or individuals for especially meritorious contributions in research and/or developing understanding in important areas of current activity. A different topic is determined annually by the ANS Board of Directors based on recommendations from the Honors and Awards Committee. Each topic is selected because of the importance to the issue with regard to the peaceful application of nuclear technology to all mankind.

The award is intended to go to an individual, or individuals, rather than to a large group or institution. The candidate should have played an outstanding role in the necessary research and analysis and/or in the interpretation and leadership associated with furthering the overall understanding of this important effort. Nominees must be living individuals and need not be ANS members.

  • A letter of recommendation
  • A narrative summary of about 1,000 words, including accomplishments, period of activity, and significance of achievements
  • A list of publications
