Established in 1962, this award recognizes an individual or individuals for especially meritorious contributions in research on and/or developing understanding in important areas of current activity.  A different topic is determined annually by the ANS Board of Directors based on recommendations from the Honors and Awards Committee.  Each topic is selected because of the importance to the issue with regard to the peaceful application of nuclear technology to all mankind.

The award is intended to go to an individual, or individuals, rather than to a large group or institution.  The candidate should have played an outstanding role in the necessary research and analysis and/or in the interpretation and leadership associated with furthering the overall understanding of this important effort.  Nominees must be living individuals and need not be ANS members.

Nomination forms are available at this web site or from ANS Headquarters.  Eight copies of the completed form and supporting materials must be received at ANS headquarters before April 1.

Plaques and a monetary award totaling $1,000 are presented to an individual or team at the ANS Annual Meeting.

The topic for the 2008 award is "Inherent and Passive Safety Features in Advanced Water Reactors."
