Spent fuel recycling and conditioning topic of U.S.-Japan meeting

Removal of iodine from reactor fuel solutions by addition of hydroxylamine nitrate to cause precipitation of insoluble PdI2 has been demonstrated. Iodine removals of ∼99% from reactor fuel solutions were achieved. The PdI2 product is very insoluble and may be a suitable form for long-term iodine storage.
