The President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) has suggested that a device with a mission of ignition and moderate burn time could address the physics of burning plasmas at a lesser cost than ITER1 with its more comprehensive physics and technology mission. The Department of Energy commissioned a study to explore this PCAST suggestion.
