NEA irradiation system ready to deploy at MITR
A new irradiation experimental system is ready for deployment. The rig, which is the focus of In-Core Real-Time Mechanical Testing of Structural Materials (INCREASE-I), an OECD Nuclear Energy Agency project, will be used to conduct stress-relaxation tests of stainless steel at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Reactor (MITR), according to the OECD NEA.

A three dimensional (3-D) shielding analysis of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) has been performed with the aim of calculating the nuclear heating on the magnet system, correlating it to the existing vertical and horizontal ports. When these openings are left unshielded, more than 50 kW are calculated for the upper half of Toroidal Field Coil system and two of the Poloidal Field Coils. A simple plug, with same thickness as of the vacuum vessel can lower the heating to meet the imposed requirements.
