North American construction is back—smaller and faster—at OPG’s Darlington
“The nuclear renaissance is real here,” said Ontario Power Generation’s Subo Sinnathamby on May 8, one year to the day after OPG secured a final investment decision to build the first of four planned BWRX-300 reactors at its Darlington nuclear power plant, and shortly after the new reactor’s foundation was lifted into place. “We got our license to construct in April and our [final investment decision] in May, and we’ve been off to the races since.”

Block I1 is the innermost group of Poloidal Field coils of the RFX machine. It is constituted by 6 Ohmic Heating coils and two Field Shaping coils moulded in one piece. These coils are made of copper conductors insulated with fibreglass and Kapton and impregnated with epoxy resin. During acceptance tests, the inter-turn insulation of a Field Shaping coil failed. The paper describes first the design of the coil in relation to its nominal working conditions, then it reports on the test conditions and the experimental results and gives an interpretation of the results.
