The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is currently working to expedite the standards endorsement process and therefore is seeking a greater amount of public review for nuclear-related standards. To that end, the Society is now posting public review opportunities for its standards on the ANS website.
The standards: ANS-2.36-202x, Accident Analysis for Aircraft Crash into Reactor and Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities, is one of the two draft standards currently open for public review. It is a proposed new standard with broad applicability to both reactor and nonreactor nuclear facilities. It provides users with the requirements and guidance needed to evaluate and assess the significance of aircraft crash risk on a nuclear facility’s safety. It also provides a framework of stepwise increases in analytical sophistication aimed at demonstrating that an aircraft crash either does or does not exceed a risk level of concern equivalent to the other generally applied sources of risk from the operation of a nuclear facility.
The deadline for public comment in response to ANS-2.36-202x is June 20. As is the case with all public comment opportunities for ANS standards, comments received after this date will not be accepted.
ANS-6.4-202x, Nuclear Analysis and Design of Concrete Radiation Shielding for Nuclear Power Plants, is the second standard open for review. It is a proposed revision of ANSI/ANS-6.4-2006 (R2021). This revision addresses hybrid transport methods and adds MicroShield and SCALE to the standard’s appendix that lists computer codes. It also addresses the presence of hydrogen content in serpentine ore and the minimum neutron energy to be considered for concrete degradation. Lastly, clarification will be included to provide additional considerations when concrete serves the dual role of shield and structural element.
The deadline for public comment in response to ANS-6.4-202x is June 22.
Get in touch: Questions regarding either of these standards or the public comment process can be sent using a form available on the ANS website. The single copy price per draft standard is $50. Comments on the standards can be sent via email to standards@ans.org.
