Smarter waste strategies: Helping deliver on the promise of advanced nuclear
At COP28, held in Dubai in 2023, a clear consensus emerged: Nuclear energy must be a cornerstone of the global clean energy transition. With electricity demand projected to soar as we decarbonize not just power but also industry, transport, and heat, the case for new nuclear is compelling. More than 20 countries committed to tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050. In the United States alone, the Department of Energy forecasts that the country’s current nuclear capacity could more than triple, adding 200 GW of new nuclear to the existing 95 GW by mid-century.

Matt Kirschenheiter is the Director of Design and Computer Engineering at TVA’s Fleet Center. In this role he has oversight of the nuclear fleet’s design, design regulatory, computer and cyber engineering programs. Matt has nearly 20 years of experience in engineering, maintenance, and operations at boiling water reactor facilities (BWR), pressurized water reactor (PWR) facilities and operating in the US Navy.
Kirschenheiter started his career as a nuclear submarine officer prior to joining TVA in 2009 and has served in various progressive roles in engineering and maintenance at TVA’s Sequoyah and Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plants. Kirschenheiter continues to serve as a Commander in the US Navy Reserve and a six-time Commanding Officer. Most recently, prior to returning to TVA in 2022, he served as the Director of Engineering and Chief Engineer at the Nevada National Security Site and in 2018 as the Director of Engineering at Fermi Nuclear Power Station (DTE).
Kirschenheiter earned his Senior Reactor Operator Management Certification from Sequoyah Nuclear Plant and is a graduate of INPO’s Senior Nuclear Plant Management. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Science in Industrial and System Engineering from the University of Alabama Huntsville.
