There is a strong case for reduction in O&M costs, operational risk, and maintenance burden through strategic replacement of plant protection systems. As plants decide on subsequent license renewal, the case for replacing aging analog protection systems becomes more powerful. This Panel will have participants from the utilities that are currently starting or in the middle of Digital Protection System Replacement Projects. The presenters will provide the current status of their Digital Protection System Project implementations or key considerations. Critical insights will include plant reliability improvements, MCR modernization, lifecycle strategies, connectivity, and data utilization and visualization of the new digital systems. Panelists will cover topics such as: initial scoping, digital platform contract considerations, stakeholder engagement, early project implementation experiences and processes, NRC licensing interactions and potential use of 50.69 to optimize safety system scope.
