DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

This panel explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and nuclear power. The most prominent current connection is the massive electricity demand of AI data centers and the growing role of nuclear power as a 24/7 clean energy source for that demand as evidenced by Microsoft's Three Mile Island power purchase agreement, Google's SMR commitments, and others. But the panel goes deeper: how is AI being used within nuclear engineering itself for reactor optimization, safety analysis, and digital twins? What are the technical and regulatory challenges of deploying AI-based control systems in nuclear environments?
