DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection

Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

This informative panel examines the landscape of advanced nuclear fuels from high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) needed for many next-generation reactor designs to molten salt fuels, TRISO, and other novel fuel forms being developed for advanced reactors and SMRs. The panel will cover the advantages and disadvantages of each fuel type, the supply chain, enrichment challenges, and regulatory hurdles.
