ANS is committed to advancing, fostering, and promoting the development and application of nuclear sciences and technologies to benefit society.
Explore the many uses for nuclear science and its impact on energy, the environment, healthcare, food, and more.
Division Spotlight
Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology
Organized to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear-based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non-specialized personnel and more.

Waste Management 2024: The symposia at 50
This year marked the 50th anniversary of Waste Management Symposia’s Waste Management Conference, held March 10–14 in Phoenix, Ariz. The event has grown significantly since the first Waste Management Conference in 1974, which attracted about 200 attendees. This year’s conference saw a record attendance of around 3,300 people from more than 20 different countries and boasted 235 technical sessions and 89 exhibitors.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Salko performs research in the area of computational thermal hydraulics to support modeling and simulation of light water reactors and molten salt reactors. His primary focus has been on development of subchannel and system thermal hydraulics codes, which includes modeling of two-phase flow and heat transfer, coupling with other reactor modeling tools, deployment on high performance computing systems, and implementing quality assurance measures and releasing software for users in the nuclear community. Bob has been working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for approximately ten years, where he has supported efforts in the US Department of Energy Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactor and Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation programs. Prior to that, Bob obtained his PhD in nuclear engineering from The Pennsylvania State University.
