Star Trek or Planet of the Apes?

      Craig Piercy
      cpiercy@ans.org

These days, the ship of civil nuclear technology we are all aboard is sailing through a turbulent passage. The winds and currents are favorable, but there are swells ahead: steep energy-demand projections, buoyant equity valuations, splashy announcements, a generational realignment of nuclear policies and institutional norms.

Part of the reason we chose “Building the Nuclear Century” as the theme for this year’s Winter Conference was to put some ballast in the hull of the nuclear conversation.

Advanced nuclear fission and fusion energy development are accelerating, both here and around the world. And yet, at least in the U.S., we are still years away from connecting commercial Gen IV systems to our grid.

In a world growing increasingly impatient, how do we stay on task and deliver? There are three ingredients to success.

Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Utah

Civil & Environmental EngineeringSalt Lake City, UT

Posted November 17, 2025Reference ID: PRN01428CF

Description

The University of Utah’s John and Marcia Price College of Engineering invites applications for a career-line lecturer faculty position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEEN), with an emphasis in Nuclear Engineering. This non-tenure-track position may be filled at the Assistant Professor level, with an anticipated start date of August 2026.

We seek dynamic educators prepared to teach across the full range of Civil, Environmental, and Nuclear Engineering. The ideal candidate has expertise in nuclear engineering but is also enthusiastic about delivering core civil and environmental engineering coursework to both undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related field by the start date, and demonstrate excellent communication skills, a dedication to student success, and a commitment to inclusive, high-quality teaching.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in nuclear engineering, including (but not limited to) nuclear fundamentals, nuclear reactor theory, radiation detection, and the nuclear fuel cycle.
  • Offer key core undergraduate courses in civil and environmental engineering, such as statics and fluid mechanics, in rotation with colleagues.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous course improvement, mentor and advise students, and actively engage in departmental service and outreach activities.

You will be joining a progressive department with 23 tenure-track faculty, three dedicated lecturers, and a vibrant research and teaching environment. The Nuclear Engineering Program (UNEP) within CVEEN awards minors, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and operates a 100 kW NRC-licensed TRIGA reactor with modern controls and premier training facilities. Our faculty benefit from strong collaborations across campus and with regional national laboratories and industry, as well as access to advanced resources including the Nanofab materials characterization center (https://www.nanofab.utah.edu). More details about the department can be found at www.civil.utah.edu.

The University of Utah is a nationally recognized R1 institution, a member of the Big 12 Conference, and is located in Salt Lake City, consistently ranked among the best places to live in the United States (US News & World Report, 2024). The University is proud to be recognized as the #1 Public University in the West (Wall Street Journal, 2024). The city provides outstanding opportunities for outdoor activities and work-life balance, along with a vibrant cultural and entrepreneurial community.

Application Materials:
Please submit a cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications, curriculum vitae, a teaching statement outlining pedagogical approach and course interests, up to three relevant publications or instructional materials, and the names and contact information for three references at https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/191087. For full consideration, applications should be received by December 2, 2025; the position will remain open until filled.

The University of Utah is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and educator strongly committed to diversity and inclusion. Veterans are encouraged to apply. Reasonable accommodations provided. Details: http://www.regulations.utah.edu/humanResources/5-106.html
