DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

There is a need in the nuclear industry for a qualified digital Safety Display System due to obsolescence and reliability issues with the currently installed display systems. This paper describes a digital Safety Display System designed by Lockheed Martin Corporation. The paper describes how the Safety Display System (SDS) interfaces with the integrated safety system. The SDS provides the man-machine interfaces to the safety system. The paper describes how the integrated safety system and SDS complies with the design principles described in the Design-Specific Review Standard, Section 7.1, Instrumentation and Controls – Fundamental Principles. The paper also describes how an integrated safety system and SDS complies with selected guidelines of DI&C-ISG-04, Section 1, Interdivisional Communications.
