Savannah River Site completes concrete work for Saltstone Disposal Unit 11
The Savannah River Site has completed all concrete construction on its “mega-size” Saltstone Disposal Unit (SDU) 11 at the Saltstone Disposal Facility in Aiken, S.C. The several SDUs at the site are designed to provide safe, permanent storage for decontaminated salt solution from the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) as production is ramped up. The SDUs are crucial components of SRS’s liquid waste program, allowing the site to meet the cleanup responsibilities of the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management.

Reducing the subjectivity of risk assessments and standardizing the training routines of inspectors from the regulatory body that guarantees knowledge keeping are the challenging issues that motivated this academic research. This paper proposes a new methodology, named the indirect parameterized risk assessment (i-PRA), that intends to answer two questions:
1. How effectively are resources applied to activities to guarantee risk minimization?
2. How can produce effective scores weighted by risk drivers be produced from running one math model that is capable of ensuring replicability, adaptability, and evolution over time with precision and accuracy?
Preliminary results from the application of the i-PRA methodology to evaluate indirect risk variables in the Brazilian nuclear sector have proved its capacity in terms of admeasurement, accuracy, and robustness.
