Swiss nuclear power and the case for long-term operation
Designed for 40 years but built to last far longer, Switzerland’s nuclear power plants have all entered long-term operation. Yet age alone says little about safety or performance. Through continuous upgrades, strict regulatory oversight, and extensive aging management, the country’s reactors are being prepared for decades of continued operation, in line with international practice.

An instrument has been designed, constructed, and tested which performs real time comparative activation analysis. The instrument directly compares the gamma-ray spectrum for a standard and a mixed unknown to determine the weight of the desired species in the unknown sample. The problem of resolution in activation analysis determinations is discussed. The mathematical basis, design, and operation of the instrument are described, and the results of two test determinations are given.
