A new breed of nuclear engineers will be needed in the years preceding demonstration of scientific feasibility of controlled thermonuclear reactions (expected in the early 1980’s) and for many decades afterwards to help solve the technological problems and to ultimately design, man, and operate fusion power reactors. A comprehensive graduate training program in “fusion science and engineering” for this new breed of engineers is proposed.
