The relationship among several approximate formutations—variational, adjoint difference, forward difference, perturbation—for the solution of deep penetration radiation transport problems is established. An expression for the theoretical error associated with each method is derived, and a strategy for the application of the newly introduced forward difference approximation is discussed.
