DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. Symmetric Y-bladed shapes have been fabricated of hafnium material for use as reactor control rods. Material fabrication techniques are discussed. The fabrication of strip hafnium and strip Zircaloy by welding into suitable shapes applicable for reactor control is outlined. Photographs of fabrication techniques, test components, and equipment used are included.
