The discrete ordinate transport equation in two-dimensional rectangular geometry is analyzed. The exact solution is shown to exhibit singularities at the so-called singular characteristic, even for arbitrarily smooth cross section, source, and external boundary conditions. The Box Explicit Method is proposed and used to numerically investigate the effect of the singular characteristic.
