New coolants, new fuels: A new generation of university reactors
Here’s an easy way to make aging U.S. power reactors look relatively youthful: Compare them (average age: 43) with the nation’s university research reactors. The 25 operating today have been licensed for an average of about 58 years.

This paper demonstrates the application of a nonlinear programming technique for the calculation of the optimal control of a nuclear reactor with explicit inequality constraints applied to the controlled input. Accurate numerical solution of the reactor dynamics is emphasized and a number of numerical examples are presented which illustrate the general utility of the optimal control procedure.
