MARVEL PDSA approval could serve as blueprint
MARVEL, the Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation project at Idaho National Laboratory, has had its preliminary documented safety analysis approved by the Department of Energy, marking a milestone in its development and serving as a potential outline for other microreactors in development.

Ten aqueous homogeneous critical assemblies were analyzed with ENDF/B-V data by means of the SAM-CE continuous energy Monte Carlo code. Calculated keff values are consistent with experiment for large, dilute assemblies but become systematically as much as 1% too large for assemblies with both high leakage and hard flux spectra. Adjustments of keff to measured capture and fission integrals indicate improvements that should be investigated further.
