Swiss nuclear power and the case for long-term operation
Designed for 40 years but built to last far longer, Switzerland’s nuclear power plants have all entered long-term operation. Yet age alone says little about safety or performance. Through continuous upgrades, strict regulatory oversight, and extensive aging management, the country’s reactors are being prepared for decades of continued operation, in line with international practice.

After presenting the strategy and objectives of the European Fusion Programme, an overview is given of the tritium related R&D activities presently undertaken in Europe and how they primarily support the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The results mainly concern tritium operations at the Joint European Torus and R&D activities conducted at the two principal European laboratories, Tritium Laboratory Karlsruhe and the European Tritium Handling Experimental Laboratory, and their support facilities.
