DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

The available data on the effects of fast neutron irradiation on the properties of fine-grain (POCO) graphites at temperatures between 950 and 1400°C are collected. New results are presented for a number of fine-grain graphites irradiated at 600°C. The results are discussed in terms of the useful lifetimes of the graphite as a function of temperature and the way this is related to crystallite behavior.
