DOE announces NEPA exclusion for advanced reactors
The Department of Energy has announced that it is establishing a categorical exclusion for the application of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) procedures to the authorization, siting, construction, operation, reauthorization, and decommissioning of advanced nuclear reactors.
According to the DOE, this significant change, which goes into effect today, “is based on the experience of DOE and other federal agencies, current technologies, regulatory requirements, and accepted industry practice.”

For about 20 years, NUKEM has been dealing with the manufacture and sale of uranium tritide containers, among others, in the field of tritium technology. The knowledge and experience gained thereby were utilized for the construction and fabrication of a storage container with a capacity of 50 kCi tritium. This container, termed UTB-50k (a reference to the German name and its size), is described in detail and its operational data are presented.
