DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

The requirements for radiological protection of a tritium plant planned for the Joint European Torus (JET) are considered. This includes the instrumentation to provide adequate monitoring at the low design level envisaged. Looking further into the future, the radiological protection (RP) problems identified by an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Working Group are outlined with a view to discussing how these problems might be solved.
