Optimized stellarators are compared, and some of their critical issues are discussed. Deficiencies of traditional stellarators are briefly recalled. Characteristics of three lines of stellarators that have emerged from the effort to remedy those traditional deficiencies are briefly described. There are different critical issues associated with these lines. Five topics have been selected, and tentative conclusions are given.
