ACRS details: The ACRS is a part-time advisory group that is statutorily mandated by the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended—which charges the group with advising the NRC “with regard to the hazards of proposed or existing reactor facilities and the adequacy of proposed safety standards."
Currently, key areas of importance to the ACRS are as follows:
Unique, novel, and noteworthy safety issues associated with new licensing applications for both light water and non–light water reactors;
The operation of commercial nuclear power plants in the United States and related regulatory initiatives;
Increased enrichment and enhanced burnup in fuels for the operating reactor fleet in support of first-of-a-kind power uprate applications.
Beyond these focus areas, the ACRS also advises the commission on health physics, radiation protection, and nuclear waste disposal facility issues.
Position details: For the currently open committee member position, the ACRS is seeking a candidate with a multidisciplinary background and experience related to the following: integrated reactor core and systems performance with an emphasis on new and novel reactor coolants, such as gas, liquid metals, and molten salts; passive and inherently safe design features; nuclear fuels (TRISO, metallic, and traditional light water) and fuel management; thermal-hydraulic phenomena; chemical engineering and high-temperature material behavior; and international codes and industrial standards used in multinational and domestic nuclear design certifications and reviews.
Candidates with nuclear safety experience in industry, academia, laboratory, or regulatory backgrounds, or work between those environments, are encouraged to apply. The candidates should have a substantial combination of education and experience and a distinguished record of achievement in multiple areas of nuclear science and technology, or related engineering disciplines.
