Division Spotlight
Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology
Organized to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear-based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non-specialized personnel and more.

Sam Altman steps down as Oklo board chair
Advanced nuclear company Oklo Inc. has new leadership for its board of directors as billionaire Sam Altman is stepping down from the position he has held since 2015. The move is meant to open new partnership opportunities with OpenAI, where Altman is CEO, and other artificial intelligence companies.

Doug Lawrence is senior vice president–Nuclear Operations & Fleet Performance, Dominion Energy Virginia.
His organization is responsible for all operational activities of the Dominion Energy fleet of seven operating reactors including operations, maintenance, outage and planning, radiation protection, and organizational effectiveness and ensuring safe and economical operations of all plant sites.
Lawrence joined Dominion in 1990 at Surry as a nuclear engineer in the Core Design Group. After several engineering roles, in 2004 he became a Unit Supervisor in the Operations department and was promoted to Shift Manager in 2007.
In 2008, Lawrence was promoted to Manager-Nuclear Site Engineering at Kewaunee Power Station. In 2009 he became their Manager–Nuclear Operations until the plant was shut down in 2013. Subsequently, Lawrence became the Director-Nuclear Safety & Licensing at Surry Power Station in 2013. In 2017, Lawrence assumed the Director-Nuclear Safety & Licensing position at Millstone Power Station until 2018 when he became their Director–Nuclear Engineering and returned to Surry in fall 2019 to become Plant Manager, where he was responsible for directing and coordinating activities associated with the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the power station. In August 2020, he was promoted to Site Vice President at Surry. In January 2022, he became Vice President-Nuclear Engineering & Fleet Support, and was named vice president–Nuclear Operations & Fleet Performance, Dominion Energy Virginia in August. He assumed his current post in May 2023.
Lawrence received his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from University of Cincinnati and his Master’s in Business Administration at Averett University. Lawrence earned a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license at Surry.
Lawrence previously served on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce for Smithfield, Isle of Wight, and Windsor in 2016 and 2017. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for FIRST Chesapeake and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project.
