GAO: Staffing problems continue to plague DOE-EM
A report by the Government Accountability Office has shown that the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management continues to face significant staffing shortages since the GAO first reported on the problem in 2024. This includes a shortage in workers considered critical to carrying out the office’s mission of cleaning up radioactive waste from decades of nuclear weapons production and research.
Plutonium Futures - The Science 2024
Matthew Higginson is currently principal research scientist for actinide analysis at the AWE. He has a PhD in nuclear and radiochemistry from the University of Manchester where he completed research on actinide separations from complex matrices. Following this Matthew has worked at the AWE for over a decade with his research focusing on all aspects of radio- and analytical chemistry relating to defence and nuclear forensics. He leads and has research interests in actinide analysis, radio-analytical chemistry, nuclear forensics, and actinide materials science.
