INL makes a case for eliminating ALARA and setting higher dose limits
A report just released by Idaho National Laboratory reviews decades of radiation protection standards and research on the health effects of low-dose radiation and recommends that the current U.S. annual occupational dose limit of 5,000 mrem be maintained without applying ALARA—the “as low as reasonably achievable” regulatory concept first introduced in 1971—below that threshold.
Noting that epidemiological studies “have consistently failed to demonstrate statistically significant health effects at doses below 10,000 mrem delivered at low dose rates,” the report also recommends “future consideration of increasing this limit to 10,000 mrem/year with appropriate cumulative-dose constraints.”

The US Department of Energy seeks to accelerate the demonstration and deployment of advanced reactors through the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. Other nations similarly have made announcements to support the deployment of nuclear reactors in their countries. At COP28 in Dubai, over 20 nations pledged to triple their nuclear capacity by 2050. In a push to decarbonize world economies, national laboratories have a key role to play in supporting the deployment of advanced reactors through the advancement of modeling and simulation capabilities, establishment of experimental facilities to study various physical phenomena, support of the nuclear regulator for licensing advanced reactors, and the training of the workforce needed to support the deployment of these reactors through university partnerships. This plenary will host leaders from various national laboratories across the US, Korea and Switzerland to discuss their key activities in support of the deployment of advanced reactors.
