Swiss nuclear power and the case for long-term operation
Designed for 40 years but built to last far longer, Switzerland’s nuclear power plants have all entered long-term operation. Yet age alone says little about safety or performance. Through continuous upgrades, strict regulatory oversight, and extensive aging management, the country’s reactors are being prepared for decades of continued operation, in line with international practice.
The Department of Nuclear Science & Engineering at MIT advances and accelerates nuclear science, engineering, and technology development for the benefit of society and the environment. Our vision is a sustainable future where nuclear science and technology are leveraged for the benefit of humankind and the planet. Our mission is to develop the next generation of leaders of the global nuclear community, advance basic research, provide technical leadership on energy and non-energy applications of nuclear technology, and inform public discussion about nuclear science and technology, in order to address global grand challenges.
