U.K.’s NWS gets input from young people on geological disposal
Nuclear Waste Services, the radioactive waste management subsidiary of the United Kingdom’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, has reported on its inaugural year of the National Youth Forum on Geological Disposal forum. NWS set up the initiative, in partnership with the environmental consultancy firm ARUP and the not-for-profit organization The Young Foundation, to give young people the chance to share their views on the government’s plans to develop a geological disposal facility (GDF) for the safe, secure, and long-term disposal of radioactive waste.
Technical Session|Panel|Challenges in Software Development for Nuclear Applications
Tuesday, April 29, 2025|1:00–2:40PM MDT|Molly Brown
Session Chair:
Paul K. Romano
Alternate Chair:
Steven P. Hamilton
As researchers and practitioners in the nuclear field, many of us not only rely on modeling and simulation for our work but are directly involved in the development of new or existing software. The software landscape has changed considerably over time, with continual evolution in which languages are popular, how software is distributed, and how software development teams work together. Software in the nuclear application space also has its own set of unique considerations, including export control regulations, verification and validation, and working across organizational barriers. This panel brings together experts with significant software development experience in the nuclear field to share their thoughts on the challenges of software development for nuclear applications and how these challenges can be addressed.
